Somm Summ 2012-12-27: 2009 Cotes du Ventoux, Chateau Valcombe 'Epicure' (S. Rhone, France)
This estate in the less than huge reputation region of the Ventoux is owned and operated by Luc and Cendrine Guénard, who purchased the estate from Paul Jeune of Domaine Monpertuis (Chateauneuf du Pape), who in turn had only owned the property for less than ten years. This 2009 is in fact their first vintage on their own, and based on what I am tasting, they have a very good start to establishing themselves and elevating the reputation of the region.
Nose is full of dark berry aromas with licorice and meaty undertones. The palate is full with a deep base of rich fruit flavors and texture. Smooth and full throttle on the finish with grippy tannins and length. A simple appellation, but not a simple wine. The flavors carry on and the style is quite good. This is something to pair with gamey meat, grilled foods and other rich foods. About $18 at retail.
60% Grenache noir, 25% Carignan, 15% Syrah
