Felsina Berardenga

This past week, I had the pleasure to meet the owner of Fattoria di Felsina, Guiseppe Mezzocolin. Mr. Mezzocolin was in the U.S. for the week to participate in Gambero Rosso’s Tre Bicchieri Tasting in New York, and was able to spend a few days working in the Connecticut market. I had the opportunity to spend Saturday afternoon tasting wines with Mr. Mezzocolin and a number of consumers – the reaction to the wines was as positive as I have ever seen, with emphasis across the selections. In fact, the first wine that was to sell out was the 2000, Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia, one of the more expensive selections! The wines from Felsina are truly some of the very best from Tuscany and are a must have for any fine wine shop or restaurant with a serious wine program. Even more importantly, this is a producer who creates compelling wines and releases them at contained prices, making Felsina accessible to all wine enthusiasts and one of Italy's greatest values!

All Felsina wines are produced from 100% Sangiovese from the estate which is located along the southern boarder of the Classico zone, ENE of Siena. In fact, Mr. Mezzocolin feels that he is more closely in terroir and and soil and climate to Montepulciano than to Chianti producers near Florence

I worked and tasted through the 2003, Chianti Classico - a wine that is beautifully crafted despite a very difficult year; the 2001, Chianti Classico Riserva - a spectacular example of how good Sangiovese can really be; 2000, Chianti Classico Riserva "Rancia" - something that is rarely seen in Tuscany, beautifully balanced and exceptionally complex - a Chianmti to age; 2000, Fontalloro - a wine made from three vineyards - one insidee the Chianti Classico zone and twoi outside the zone - tremendous.

Giuseppe Mazzocolin, aided by consultant Franco Bernabei, has enjoyed great success at Felsina. In fact they have won 18 Tre Bicchieri awards from Gambero Rosso, as well as many high scores from other wine publications. There truly is almost no comparison with the quality coming from Felsina. These are remarkable wines.
