Bedford International = Tasty Italian Estates
BEDFORD INTERNATIONAL with David Belardino
This past week I had the pleasure of working with David Belardino, who is following in his father and grandfather’s footsteps by entering the wine import business with Bedford International – fine Italian wine importers. David and I spent the day focusing on the wines listed below, but Bedford has a selection of 20 different estates that they import. This is one of the key factors when considering Bedford: they are primarily dealing with estates of very high quality. There are several production wines like Oggi and Noble Romans, but just about every other producer is growing and bottling their own products.
I have had the opportunity to visit many of these estates to taste and experience these wines first hand. They are all focused on producing some of the very best wines from their region with many prestigious awards for many of the wines. Bedford represents the breadth of Italian wines: from Puglia in the south to Piedmont and Friuli in the north and many regions in between. Take a close look at these wines they are some of the most exciting wines in the Worldwide Wines’ Italian portfolio.

2004, Torre Rosazza Pinot Grigio (Colli Orientali del Friuli) – I had the opportunity to visit this beautiful estate about five years ago – it is situated in the rolling green hills along the Slovenian border. Very aromatic for a PG, with lovely light mineral and white fruit aromas followed b y a lush but focused style on the palate. I worked in the market with this wine earlier in the week and everyone that tasted agreed that it was really a superior style. Very good for white wine and exceptional for Pinot Grigio.
2004, Falchini Vernaccia di San Gimiagno “Solatio” (Tuscany) – tasted twice this week, completely estate bottled. Lovely fruit on the nose, which is a bit subdued like many Italian white varietals, palate is clean and very focused with crisp, fresh acid, crisp lemony fruit and a finish that lingers with clean minerals and citrus. Great wine to pair with appetizers and light cheese/cured meat plates.
2003, Fatt. Le Sorgenti Chianti (Colli Fiorentini) – deep dark color for Sangiovese, bright Bing cherry and red fruits in the aromas, quite smooth on the palate with soft cherry fruit and a clean, very fresh almost velvety over the palate – quite good. This is a well drinking Chianti. Polished style without being sappy or misleading – tastes like Tuscany.
2001, Michele Castellani Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso (Verona) – chocolate and cedar wrapped around dark cherry aromas, rich and smooth on the palate with black cherry licorice flavors mixed with plum and spice. Fun wine. No raisins – longish finish – very good.
2000, Dessilani Fara “Caramino” (Piedmont) – a single vineyard blend from this longtime producer from the northern parts of Piedmont. A blend of Nebbiolo (80%), and 10% each of Vespolina and Bonarda. Dark garnet red/black, smoky earthy ripe leather and berry/cherry aromas on the nose. Dark black licorice and Bing cherry flavors with a dry attack and smooth, dry finish. Really interesting wine.
