Domaine d'Andezon Cotes du Rhone, 2005
This is a wine that I bought while on vacation in Florida, and I am always wary of wines that I buy in Florida: the weather is warm and the trucks (most of which are not actually refers), have to go long distances to deliver their cases to the various stores - buyer beware!!
This wine is an Eric Solomon Selection and has the characteristic Solomon style: well made but big to the point of almost being over the top. The Andezon Cotes du Rhone is 100% Syrah from older vines (one tech sheet says 100+ year old vines and the other says 60+...???). The style at first me made think that the wine had gotten cooked a bit along the way, but I think that it is supposed to be big to the point of feeling fuzzy and making you think about stews and roasted meats. Spicier than fruity, deep flavors really come through. It is initially a bit awkward but comes around to being quite drinkable once you have a bit of food along with it. I like this wine, but it is not so much my style, which I like to think zeros in on finesse rather than power. Drink this with some steaks or a big roast - something that has a lot of the garrigue in the sauce will make it especially favorable. About $13 in FLA.
